James Berg was elected National Inspector in 2015. He’s a Life Member of Chapter 2001, California, joining MOPH in 2008. He served as Chapter Commander for three years, one year as Department Judge Advocate, two terms as Department Commander and was National Purple Heart Trail Coordinator before becoming National Inspector.
Patriot Berg enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. in 1969, with one abbreviated tour in Vietnam, was wounded in 1071 while with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Division and received an honorable discharge in 1973 at the rank of Sergeant. His military awards include the Purple Heart, Navy Commendation Medal with "V,” Good Conduct Medal and assorted (and rather colorful) campaign and service medals.
Working full time and attending school full time eventually led to Berg receiving two AA degrees, a BS degree in Administration of Law Enforcement and one completed semester towards a Masters degree.
He has 32 years of experience in Law Enforcement; 4 years with the Veterans Administration Police as a liaison officer to the U.S. District Court in San Jose, and 28 years with the Milpitas Police Department (a small, 100 person department between Fremont and San Jose, California). At Milpitas, he rose through the ranks (Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, acting Captain) and retired in 2006 as a Division Commander. Early in his career, as a Detective and undercover narcotics officer, he investigated everything from a bicycle theft to a homicide. As a Commander, he managed and led all three Divisions within the Department, including the Investigations Division.
He is a graduate of the U.S. Police Officers Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas, the Santa Clara Police Academy in Santa Clara, California, and the FBI National Academy in Quantico Virginia.
He served two terms on the Shasta County Grand Jury; the first term as the Criminal Justice Committee Chairperson and the second term as the Foreperson. He is currently an appointed member to two County Boards of Appeal, and Governor-appointed to the U.S. Selective Service Board.
